About Mr. Gruenewald

I am so excited to be back at Castille for my fifth year.  Last year was so amazing.

Welcome to the Superhero Classroom! I hope everyone had a great summer.  I am looking forward to hearing all about your summer during the first few weeks of school.

I thought I would give you a little bit about my backeround.  I grew up in Mission Viejo.  My family moved to Mission Viejo in 1977 and my parents have resided in Mission Viejo ever since. I am lucky to have them less than 2 miles from me.   I attended Castille from first grade through sixth grade.  Then I attended Newhart Junior High School for seventh and eighth grade. Finally, I attended Capistrano Valley High School and graduated in 1990.    It is so excited to be back at Castille Elementary School 30 years after I left as a student.  If you look closely in my classroom, you can see my student council president plaque from 1983-1984.

This year marks my twenty-fourth year in education. I taught for six years in Jurupa Unified School District (in Riverside) immediately after graduating from UC Riverside.  I then returned home to Orange County and CUSD to teach sixth grade at Niguel Hills Middle School in 2001/2002.  From 2002-2006 I was then Assistant Principal at Newhart Middle School.  For eight years, I was the Principal at Del Obispo Elementary School.  Although I loved being a principal and really enjoyed seeing all of my students matriculate up to the middle school, my passion for teaching and the close relationships found in the classroom were still missing.   I found it hard to be at the school site for so many hours after dismissal with a young daughter at home.  In 2014, (with the support of my family) I made the decision to return to the classroom as a teacher so I would have the flexibility with my work hours in teaching to allow me to spend more time with my family and still grade papers and/or plan lessons after my daughter goes to bed.  I am so happy to be back teaching 4th grade for the fifth straight year.

My wife, Jamie( a teacher in CUSD as well ), and I have lived in Mission Viejo since 2004.  After trying for several years to have a child, we were blessed in January of 2010 to welcome our daughter, Katie, to our family.    With Jamie being six feet tall, and with me being six feet seven inches tall, you will see Katie growing very quickly.  Katie is a Castille Coyote this year as a third grade student this year.

In the pictures on the website, you will notice our family loves Disney.    I have begun running more over the last few years. Last year I ran in my first marathon at DisneyWorld.   Many Castille families see me running around the areas near Lake Mission Viejo and the RSM Lake. On November 11,  2018, I will have run my next marathon in Las Vegas.   I am also very active with my daughter in the YMCA Adventure Guides. I am in the Friendly Shining Spirit Expedition and more specifically the Surfers.  Katie and I love to go camping.

I am looking forward to teaching 4th grade again this year.  My passion is mathematics.  I have always loved teaching math and seeing students love learning this subject.  I enjoy trying to make math feel more like a game to students.  The 4th grade curriculum with the Common Core standards will allow us to go much deeper and focus on critical thinking skills as we adopt our new math series this year.  .
