My name is Vikki Fairchild and I am extremely excited to begin my second year here at Castille!  I began my teaching career over 20 years ago in Long Beach and before coming to Castille I taught second grade at Kinoshita Elementary School.  I received my Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies and Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from California State University Dominguez Hills.  I embrace curiosity and exploration!  I believe students learn best by communicating, collaborating, creating and using critical thinking.  It is my goal to establish a love for learning, provide a safe and loving learning environment, and support students with the skills they need to be successful in the 21st century!

My husband Mike and I are high school sweethearts.  We have two twin children Adam (18), Lauren (18) and a five year old Husky.  Most of our weekends are spent watching softball, going to the beach, riding bikes, family dinners and weekend getaways.

November Math Activities

These activities are meant to be short daily practice.

  • Count small objects in collections from 50-90. check for accuracy and 1 to 1 correspondence. Practice grouping by tens and ones.  Ask your child how many tens and ones are in the number of objects they counted.

  • Work on facts for making 10  10+? = 10, 9+?= 10, 8+?= 10, 7+?=10, 6+?=10, 5+?=10.  Your child should know these without needing to count on their fingers.  Also work on related subtraction facts (ex 10-0=10. 10-9=1, 10-8=2, 10-7=3, 10-6=4, 10-5=5).

  • Play Go to the Dump with your child- use UNO cards 0-10.  Each player gets 4 cards. Players take turns asking each other for a card that will make 10 with a card they have.  For example, if you have 4 you will ask for a 6.If they don’t have you go to the dump to get a card.

  • Practice counting by 10’s starting at any number other than 1 (example start at 7. 7,17,27,37,47,57 etc).

  • Practice Tallying.  Tally the number of sight words you can find in a book.

  • Log into Prodigy.com to work on our first grade math skills.
