Class News Week of 10-7

10/07/18

Myah is Star of the Week.

Library books are due Thursday.

Reading Counts-  A few weeks ago a flyer came home explaining Reading Counts.  It is a program used by the entire school to earn points for reading and reading comprehension.  The students can read stories at school and at home and take quizzes on the books on the computers at school.  The quizzes are not available on home computers.  If your child reads a book at home that they would like to take a quiz on they can fill out the title and author on a bookmark from class and take a quiz each week in the computer lab or each day in class on our desktop computer.  (however at the moment our desktop computer is down and is waiting on IT from the district).

Boosterthon-  We will have our kick-off to our Boosterthon Fun Run assembly.  This is our major fund raiser for this school year which is also hooked to the Fun Run on October 19th.  Look for more information this week.

Completed Reading Logs-  Our first grade reading log is a major component of your child's homework.   It is preferable that they read or are read to each night for at least 20 minutes (7days) ; however your child will receive full credit for homework if at least 4 days of 20min or more are completed.

Class News Week of 10-1

09/30/18

Ravi is Star of the Week

Library-We went to the library for the first time last Thursday.   The kids can return their books either Wednesday or Thursday.  If they do not return their library book they will not be able to check out a new one.  This is a big bummer for a first grader.  Please do your best. 😊

Batteries Needed-We are starting our new science unit on light and sound waves.  We will be using flashlights which the science lab has but we need "D" batteries.  If you are able to donate a pack let me know.  We can use them asap.

Computer Lab/ Headphones- We will start at the computer lab on Tuesday.  Your child will need headphones for this.  Please send in a pair asap.  They will be returned to you in June.

Parent/Teacher Conferences-Last week, I sent out a sign-up genius to schedule parent teacher conferences.  These must be done face to face in the fall.  We will go over their fall report card and discuss goals for the year.   If you did not get the sign-up genius invitation please let me know asap so I can send it out again.

Booster Donations -We started using your booster club donations this week.  The kids attended a really great science assembly to kick off our science unit on light waves.  If you have not sent in your donation we could really use it.  We need every cent. Donations will also be used for our field trip in the spring and your child's memory book. Thanks

Website Update-I have uploaded new math activities for October on to the class website  if you are looking for activities to do with your child to enhance our math program.  I have also posted pics from class activities since the beginning of school.

Have a wonderful week.

Class News Week of 9-24

09/23/18

Alannah is this week's Star of The Week.

Start With Hello Week and Character Day-  This is a special week where we will discuss making new friends, including others, and ending the feeling of social isolation.  In honor of building great character within our school community we will all be wearing green on Wednesday.

Library- Our library day is Thursday at the very end of the day (1:30).  We will go each week.  Your child will bring home a book to be read and returned each Thursday.  Please  find a good safe place to store these.  It is a great opportunity for your child to be responsible.  They will not be able to check out a new book each week unless the old book is returned. J

Booster Club Donations- Thank you to all who have turned in their booster club donations for our extra assemblies, Memory books, and Field Trip.  I have received checks from about half the class.  Please get you donations in as soon as possible.  We have out first assembly this Thursday.  Thank you so much.  Your donations really enhance our programs.

Thank you to all that have brought in Headphones:

About half the class has brought in headphones for use this year.  Your child needs to have their own headphones to use at the computer lab, listening centers, and ipads in class. Please send them to school in a ziploc bag labeled with your child's name. The computers in the lab and in the room do not have external speakers so they cannot hear the programs without headphones. There are a few pairs available in the computer lab but they are shared with all of the students in school. We will keep them at school for use throughout the year and they will be returned to you at the end of the year.

Class Directory:

I have made some changes to class directory for our class.  I have again attached it to this e-mail.   I will send home a "flawless" hard copy in your coyote connection (Thursday)

School picture proofs went home in Coyote folders on Thursday.  Thursday is make-up picture day.  Please let us know if you are requesting a make-up picture for your child.

Parent-Teacher conferences will be held the week of October 29.  I will send out a Sign-Up Genius later this afternoon.  Please sign up for one conference for your child.  This is a time for us to discuss your child's progress and goals for first grade.  The schedule that week is full of minimum days and 1 student free day (11/1).  Please read schedule outlined on website or sign up genius so you can plan accordingly.

Thank you and have a wonderful week!

Class News Week of 9-17

09/16/18

It was so nice to see all of you at Back To School Night last Wednesday.  I am looking forward to a great year.

Brynn is this week's Star of The Week.

Wonders:

We will start our first week in our Wonders reading series this week.  Please see the "Peek At A Week" newsletter in your child's homework folder for theme, sight words, vocabulary, and books to read to support our program each week.

Headphones:

Your child needs to have their own headphones to use at the computer lab, listening centers, and ipads in class. Please send them to school in a ziploc bag labeled with your child's name. The computers in the lab and in the room do not have external speakers so they cannot hear the programs without headphones. There are a few pairs available in the computer lab but they are shared with all of the students in school. We will keep them at school for use throughout the year and they will be returned to you at the end of the year.

Class Directory:

I have put together the first draft of our class directory.  Please check your information and let me know if I made any errors.  I am not known for being a great typist so I am sure there are mistakes.  Once I have a "flawless" hard copy I will send you one home in your coyote connection (hopefully Thursday)

Volunteers:

Please check it out if you plan to volunteer in our class this year.  If I forgot you or placed you somewhere that won't work let me know asap.   I will need sight word volunteers this Friday.  I will also need Thursday folder helpers, and Homework Folder helpers this week.  Everyone else will start the week of 9/24.  Thank you so much. * I am still in need of more helpers for computer lab and library on Thursdays from 1:20- 2:00 (Must be a Tier 1 helper).

Homework:

The First Grade Homework materials came home on Friday. The cover sheet and reading log are due each Friday.

·         First Grade Sight Word List - Please have your child begin practicing the First Grade Sight Words. Every student will begin on list #1 and they will be tested on one list each week. Students will be tested on reading the words. However, if your child needs a challenge they can learn how to spell the words as well.

·         The most important part of First Grade Homework is daily reading - at least 20 minutes per night! The REQUIRED Reading Logs are due at the end of each week. A new Reading Log will be sent home each week in the Thursday folder and should be returned the following Friday. The first Reading Log will be due on Friday, September 22.

Class News-Week of 9/10

09/09/18

I am looking forward to another wonderful week.  We are ready start table teams and table points for positive reinforcement and teamwork in class.

Paws awards if your child recieves  a bright green paws award keep it and when your child earns 10 they can turn them in to me.  I will award them a golden ticket for recognition and a restuarant certificate at the school-wide Wednesday flag ceremony.  This is part of our school-wide positive discipline plan.

Back to School Night  will be on Wednesday evening in our Room (#5).  My presentation will be from 5:45- 6:30pm.  This is an adult only evening.  I can't wait  to tell you more about the first grade curriculum and our exciting  plans for the year.  I hope to see all of you there.  Due to Back to School Night school will get out early on the the 12th.  School will be dismissed at 11:50 AM       ( we will still have snack and lunch even though we are out early).

Class Volunteers- I sent home a survey about your availability to volunteer in last week's Thursday (Coyote) folder.  Please turn this in asap so I can put together a schedule of volunteers for the year.  Thank you to all who have turned it in already.  If you want to volunteer on a regular basis you must be cleared by Livescan.  If you did this last year you do not have to do it again.  Contact the school office to set up a time with Livescan.

Water Bottles-  Your child may bring a water bottle to school and have it on their desk and at recess throughout the day as long as it is filled with water only and it doesn't become a toy or a distraction. The kids are doing great with this!!!

Spirit Wear-  All spirit wear orders are due by Friday September, 14th.

Have a great week, I hope to see all of you on Wednesday night!

Class Notes -Week of 9/3

09/03/18

I want all of you to know how proud I am of your children.  The first few weeks of first grade are full of new procedures and a long day.   The students are doing so well and we are looking forward to a great year.

School Picture Day is Wednesday, September 5th.  The photographers will take several pictures and send home the proofs for you to order.  You do not need to send money on the 5th.  All the children's photos will be taken.

There are 3 papers from the first day packet that must come back signed with each student.  I have attached photos of what they look like.

      1.  Data Comfirmation Sheet- this must be down-loaded and signed after you have updated your parent portal on-line.  I cannot give you another copy of this one- you must print it out.

      2. McKinney Vento Form-  I will send another copy of this in the Coyote folder on Thursday if I have not received one for your child

      3. PTA Waiver-  This is a permission slip for PTA activities this year.  Your child may not participate in the funrun and many other PTA sponsered activities without this being signed and returned.  I will put another copy in this week's Coyote folder if I have not received one from you.

Water Bottles-  Your child may bring a water bottle to school and have it on their desk and at recess throughout the day as long as it is filled with water only and it doesn't become a toy or a distraction.

Have a great week.

Class News Week of 8-26

08/26/18

Thank you for sending in supplies.  We all appreciate your generosity!

Congratulate your child on a great first week. I know that transition to a full day can be very hard.  Let them know I am looking forward to seeing them tomorrow morning.

A few reminders:

*In the mornings, students should wait at our line by the drinking fountain on the blacktop.  Please do not send them directly to the classroom.  We line up in a boys and girls line.  Any help you can provide to help them not be in a clump is appreciated.

*If a student is tardy, he/she must stop by the office to get a tardy slip before coming to the classroom.

*For children who buy lunch, please help them memorize their lunch numbers!  These were sent home on the first day of school.  The line goes much more quickly when they have their numbers memorized.  Also this is their computer log-in password (with a lower case “a” added to the end) clear through high school so the faster they memorize it the easier computer lab will be.

*Thursday folders should be returned to school every week on Friday.

*Save the Date!  Back to School Night is Wednesday, September 12.  I look forward to seeing you then.  This is a parent only evening. :)

Thank you for your support.  We are all looking forward to a great year in first grade!

Monthly Math Activites

December Math Activities

These activities are meant to be short daily practice.

  • Count small objects in collections from 50-90. check for accuracy and 1 to 1 correspondence. Practice grouping by tens and ones.  Ask your child how many tens and ones are in the number of objects they counted.

  • Work on facts for With 10’s  10+0=, 10+1=, 10+2=, 10+3=, 10+4=, 10+5=, 10+6=, 10+7=, 10+8=, 10+9=, 10+10=.  Your child should know these without needing to count on their fingers. Also work on related subtraction facts (ex 11=1=10, 11-10=1, etc.).

  • Write a word problem and show how to solve it.

  • Practice counting by 10’s starting at any number other than 1 (example start at 7. 7,17,27,37,47,57 etc).
